Cozumel is a 647 km² island in the Caribbean Sea, 19 km off Playa del Carmen. It forms part of the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef — the second largest in the world — and is widely regarded as one of the top five dive destinations on the planet.
The island's western side faces a protected channel with almost no current, visibility often exceeding 30 meters and water temperatures between 25–28°C year-round. Even for first-time divers, conditions are rarely this forgiving.
Beyond the reef, Cozumel has a small town (San Miguel), quiet beaches on the windward side, and a growing food scene. Day trips from Playa del Carmen are common, but staying a night reveals a slower, different island.
