Chichén Itzá from Tulum or Playa del Carmen: how to get there and which tour to pick
About 2.5 hours from Tulum and 3 hours from Playa del Carmen. The three ways to go, what a good tour should include and the departures with pickup in your area.

Yes, you can visit Chichén Itzá in one day from Tulum or Playa del Carmen. From Tulum it is about 2 to 2.5 hours by road, on the highway through Valladolid, and from Playa del Carmen about 3 hours. The easiest way is a tour with pickup in your area that includes the Chichén Itzá entrance, a cenote, lunch and Valladolid; if you want total freedom, the other option is renting a car.
How long is the drive
- Tulum to Chichén Itzá: about 150 km, 2 to 2.5 hours.
- Playa del Carmen to Chichén Itzá: about 220 km, close to 3 hours.
- Valladolid is 45 minutes before Chichén Itzá, which is why almost every tour stops there.
From Tulum the ride is shorter than from Cancún, so the day feels lighter.
Your three options
- A tour with pickup in Tulum or Playa del Carmen. No driving, the entrance is included and a guide explains the site. The most comfortable choice for a first visit.
- A rental car. You arrive at opening time (8 am) and move at your own pace. Add up rental, gas, tolls, parking and every entrance separately.
- ADO bus. The cheapest, but there are few direct departures a day and you arrive when the site is already crowded and hotter.
What a good tour should include
- Chichén Itzá entrance included (about $697 MXN for foreign visitors if you pay it yourself).
- A certified guide and free time at the site.
- At least one cenote to swim in.
- Lunch.
- A stop in Valladolid.
Check that it says "entrance included": many cheap tours charge it separately at the ticket office.
